These pictures were taken just off of Kihei Rd in Kihei on the north side of town. Many of the outrigger canoe shots were located at Kalepolepo Beach Park

Many of the pictures are looking out over Maalaea bay toward the northern side of the island (where the sun was setting) – Below

Pictures of all sorts of plants taken against a brilliant red and orange twilight from high up on the island of Maui

Well the colors in these pictures won’t vary a lot… these were the colors of the late twilight from pretty high up on the island of maui. In fact a little over 6000ft elevation.

I shot mainly with the telephoto and just focused on nice silhouette pictures of the plants that were in front of me as I walked up and down the dirt road. It was pretty dark already except for this thin line of red and orange which stayed for what seemed like a long while.

Naupaka Beach is a black sand beach in the Makena State park boundries on the island of Maui in Hawaii

This is one of the 3 popular beaches of the Makena area you can read more here This beach is lesser known and that showed as there was no one there when we got there and only a couple of people came and went for the short time we were there.

There is several resorts in the area (to the south) and a big golf course bordering the beach to the south.

There had been a fire burning on the north mountain with smoth drifting south along the waterfront all day long so the time before the sunset was very very golden in color and seemed like it would be quite amazing. But when the sun set it was far from the sunset that one might have expected. But really I can’t complain, I was on a beautiful Hawaiian beach at sunset.

I very much liked the beach, it wasn’t so much a beach you’d lay out at or even do a lot of swimming at. But it was certainly more of the beach you’d walk up and down at admiring the more exotic beauty and feel of the area.

When it started to get dark a few young kids came in their truck and had a small fire on the sand. It was very much that type of beach… the type where you go and hang out with friends but not so much for swimming or laying out.

One of the best parts was seeing a beautiful spotted dear with large antlers right when we got to the beach. I was pretty shocked to see it out of no where but it seemed quite at home, there is pretty thick forrest you drive through to get to the beach itself. No pictures but trust me it was very nice and very unlike those seen in the west of the united states.

DI took some but these views don’t show off the blackness of the sand near the water. Some of the ones below show that it’s darker than a typical beach but not the areas of actual black sand.

Here you see the gold course located in the distance on the south end of this beach.

Just a quick post of a fun picture taken on the north coast of maui.

She was just walking by so I snapped a few pics as she crossed the scene.

Taken while in the car. When she walked back she said sorry for getting in the picture… I laughed.

Paia Bay is on the east side of Maui just south a bit from the main airport.

We got there just as the sun was rising and there were already colors in the sky. I tried to document all aspects of the bay and the beach. There is plenty more to show so consider this somewhat of a teaser, mostly focusing on the sunrise.

The town of Paia has a website dedicated to it http://www.paiamaui.com/

We don’t show any pictures of the town in this post but this is what that website says about it

Paia is a reflection of its history as a booming sugar cane plantation town with its old plantation style wooden buildings still intact. This quaint little beach town has an array of fine specialty shops, boutiques, surf shops, antique stores, bakeries, and even an old fashioned tattoo parlor. Award wining restaurants offer casual and full service dining with local and international culinary delights.

We weren’t going to make it to the water in time, and I’ve done so many sunsets right at the water I didn’t mind at all trying it from up on the mountain side. So here we are… me walking down the highway trying to find a great foreground. I passed by this one at the perfect time. If you’re wondering the colors weren’t touched post process… but they were probably touched in camera more than I would have even in lightroom. I finagled the white balance to make these a little warmer than usual. Just goes to show you that camera IS a computer.

Here’s another look below
